Instead of talking about what's broken, your team generates provocative questions that invite creative solutions.   • Write the problem statement together before generating questions — a shared problem produces more aligned questions.
  • Aim for 30–50 HMW questions before filtering. The first 10 are always obvious.
  • After voting, test your top questions: 'If we solved this, would it matter?' That's the real filter.

What makes a good HMW question?

It's specific enough to suggest a direction but open enough to allow multiple solutions. Too broad ('How might we improve the product?') invites everything. Too narrow ('How might we add a search bar?') is just a solution in question form.

How many HMW questions should we generate?

Aim for 30–50 before filtering. The first 10 are obvious — the interesting ones come after you've pushed through the predictable responses.

When in the design process should we use this?
